John Kelly

Photography has always been a part of my life. From my early years as a kid with my first Polaroid camera, through a career that’s lasted four decades, it seems like I’ve always been taking photographs. It’s written in my DNA.

My visual interests are varied, and I believe that is reflected in my body of work. Fine art photography is the ultimate culmination of my career. It’s free and open, it’s spontaneous and fun, and it’s deeply satisfying.

What I love most about my personal projects is that I’m free to explore a subject without limitation. Whether it’s a landscape, a still life, or an abstract, it all represents freedom to me, a way to express myself without constraint. As I become immersed in a subject, I can feel the magic begin to happen, when time falls away and the external world seems unimportant. It’s just the subject, the camera and me.

I find inspiration for a single image, or a series can come from just about anywhere. Often it begins with a visual cue, something I see and want to explore and capture, or it’s a thought and I’ll wonder how that could work as a photograph.

I’m just as comfortable shooting in the studio as I am in the field. Each has their place and I enjoy them equally. The studio offers greater control, while shooting on location can be more spontaneous. I work with medium and small format cameras, and process and print the images in my digital darkroom.
